After traveling 24 hours we arrived in Oslo Monday evening, leaving us one full day to cover the city. True to form Denise and I were up and out the door by 6:30 a.m. First stop the Badstuforening Sauna for a treatment (the Oslo Fjord water was COLD!). Oslo has a good public transit system so we purchased an Oslo Pass to use throughout the day. The pass had lots of benefits – 20% discount at restaurants, transportation via train, tram, bus, and water taxi (we used all), and free admission to museums.
After the sauna we headed to Holmenkollen to zipline off the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic jump tower. “Kollensvevet” is a zipline going from the top of Holmenkollen down to the base. The tower gives you some of the best views of Oslo. The Ski Museum was informative telling you all about the importance of skis and skiing in Norway.
We left the mountain region and headed down to the marina area to visit the Fram Museum which lets you experience history as if you were there. The actual expedition ship, The Fram is there and you can step onto the ship and tour all levels. We were in awe of how much had been preserved and how small the people were.
Last stop was the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History which houses a Stave Church from the 1200s. The old church is opulently carved with entwined dragons and plants. The inside alter was decorated with saints and religious relics. All of it was stunning. We then took a water taxi back to the mainland which was a welcome relief after the 20k steps we took. Tomorrow we board Bergensbanen train to our next destination, Bergen.
